Here’s Exactly Why Cameron Diaz Has Disappeared From The Limelight

Cameron Diaz enjoyed 20 years as a box-office draw after her breakthrough performance in 1994’s The Mask. But the blonde bombshell has been unusually quiet as of late. Here’s a look at why the much-loved actress appears to have completely disappeared from our screens.

Born in San Diego in 1972, Cameron Diaz first made a name for herself as a fashion model. She appeared in shoots for Levi’s and Calvin Klein, graced the cover of Seventeen magazine and filmed an ad for Coca-Cola. But she would become a household name when she switched to acting and landed the role of Tina Carlyle in smash hit The Mask.

And Diaz went on to become one of the most popular actresses of her generation, starring in box-office successes such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary and Charlie’s Angels. Critical acclaim wasn’t lacking for Diaz, either, as she was praised for her roles in Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky and Gangs of New York.

Indeed, Diaz spent two decades as a permanent big-screen fixture. Shrek, Minority Report, The Holiday and What Happens in Vegas were just some of her other success stories during this period. But after Diaz had celebrated her 20th anniversary in Hollywood, things went strangely quiet.

In 2014 three movies in which Diaz starred were released: The Other Woman, Sex Tape and Annie. However, her performance as Miss Hannigan in the latter film appears to have been her swansong. Why? Well, apart from a guest appearance on kids’ show Yo Gabba Gabba! in 2014, Diaz hasn’t acted on screen since.

So what has caused the once-prolific actress to go AWOL? Well, there are several theories. Some believe that her recent lack of critical acclaim may have inspired Diaz to take stock of her career. You have to go as far back as 2005’s In Her Shoes to find one of her films with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of “fresh.”

It may also be the case that casting directors are not as assured of Diaz’s star power as they once were. After all, her last two films, Sex Tape and Annie, underwhelmed at the box office. So perhaps the actress isn’t being offered the kind of roles she was once handed on a plate and is just biding her time until she finds one that appeals.

Maybe, though, Diaz is just enjoying reaping the rewards that come with being a Hollywood star for 20 years. Diaz has appeared on Forbes’ annual list of wealthiest female entertainers, thanks to an estimated fortune of $100 million. She can therefore certainly afford to take a few years away from the limelight.

However, in 2017 – and after much speculation – Diaz herself explained one of the reasons for her Hollywood absence. She did so while appearing alongside Gwyneth Paltrow on a panel at the In Goop Health event; and there the star admitted that working non-stop for 20 years had taken its toll.

On that occasion, Diaz told the audience that she desperately needed to take a break to rediscover who she was. She explained, “I just went, ‘I can’t really say who I am to myself.’ Which is a hard thing to face up to. I felt the need to make myself whole.”

Of course, Diaz has also been adjusting to married life too. The star walked down the aisle with Good Charlotte frontman Benji Madden in 2015, just 17 days after getting engaged. The pair had been introduced to each other in 2014 by Madden’s sister-in-law Nicole Richie.

Furthermore, Diaz was quizzed by Paltrow at the Goop event as to why she had waited so long to get hitched. In response, she said, “I think it’s a matter of I just hadn’t met my husband, you know? I had boyfriends before. And there’s a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends. And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything.”

Diaz also revealed how her and Madden’s relationship is founded on the concept of equality. She continued, “We women are objectified so much. Somehow my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it’s like not to have that be a part of a relationship.”

Unlike Diaz, though, Benji Madden has remained just as busy career-wise since they got together. In 2015 he founded music company MDDN with his two brothers. Then, a year later, his band Good Charlotte dropped their sixth LP, Youth Authority, which reached number 23 on the Billboard 200.

But Diaz hasn’t been entirely absent from the spotlight since abandoning Hollywood. In January 2018, for instance, she was pictured alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Adele at the Women’s March in Los Angeles. The trio joined up with thousands of other people to advocate their support for equal rights.

And in 2016 Diaz also made several guest appearances on a number of daytime chat shows, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Rachael Ray and Good Morning America. She also played a drinking game on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

Diaz was hitting the promotion trail at the time after the release of her second book. The Longevity Book saw the actress offer practical and personal advice about the process of ageing. Her first published work, The Body Book, had previously reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list.

But as of early 2018 Annie remains the last entry on Diaz’s filmography, and she doesn’t appear to have any plans to add to it. What’s more, according to tabloid speculation, she may have a much more personal project in the pipeline. Indeed, in January 2018 a insider revealed to Us Weekly that the actress is reportedly planning to start a family.

The source told the magazine, “[Diaz] is enjoying being at home and being a housewife. She would love more than anything to be a mom. At this point, [Diaz and Madden] would be very happy with the miracle of one child. They aren’t really thinking past the first one at this point. They would love to have the chance to be parents.”

And in late 2017 another insider told Life and Style magazine that the couple are in the process of adopting a baby. “Though [Diaz and Madden] are fulfilled in every way, they feel this would complete their family. Cameron feels like the timing is right,” the source revealed. Whatever happens, though, it seems unlikely that Diaz will be returning to our screens any time soon.
